Materials Needed:
Lotus seeds: Choose high-quality seeds that are not cracked or damaged.
Warm water: For soaking the seeds.
Pot or container: At least 30 cm deep.
Mud soil: Best if it is clay mixed with mud, available at garden stores.
Water: To maintain a moist environment for the plant.
How to Plant Lotus Seeds:
Step 1: Prepare the Seeds
Scarify the seed coat: Use sandpaper or a knife to gently scarify a part of the seed coat to allow water to penetrate easily. Be careful not to damage the inner part of the seed.
Soak the seeds: Soak the seeds in warm water (around 25-30°C) for 2-4 days. Change the water daily and remove any seeds that float to the surface, as they may be damaged. The seeds will start to sprout in about 2-4 days.
Step 2: Prepare the Planting Container
Choose a pot or container: Select one with suitable dimensions and no drainage holes to retain water better.
Add mud soil: Fill the pot with mud soil, ensuring a thickness of at least 15-20 cm.
Add water: Fill the container with water so that the water level is 5-10 cm above the soil surface.
Step 3: Plant the Lotus Seeds
Plant the seeds: Once the seeds have sprouted, gently place them on the surface of the mud. Do not bury them too deep, just enough to prevent them from floating away.
Care: Place the pot in a location with direct sunlight for at least 6-8 hours a day. Monitor the water level and add more as needed to keep the surface moist.
Step 4: Care for the Lotus Plants
Monitor growth: When the plants start to produce leaves above the water surface, you may need to adjust the water level to suit the plant’s growth.
Fertilize: After about 4-6 weeks, you can add organic fertilizer or specialized lotus fertilizer to provide necessary nutrients.
Pest control: Regularly check the plants for early detection and timely handling of any pests.
Notes:
Lotus plants need plenty of sunlight, so choose the best location with adequate light.
If planting in a small pond or tank, ensure the water remains clean and unpolluted.
